Basic Search:

Title - enter the whole title or just the beginning of the title: advances in
- leading articles (a, an, the, der,...) should not be entered: (the) old man and the sea

Author Browse - enter the author's surname first, followed by the christian name (not required): young hugh
- you can also search by the name of an organization: university of oulu

Journal title - enter the whole title of the journal or just the beginning of the title: world heritage rev
- leading articles (a, an, the, der,...) should not be entered: (the) times

Subject - enter the subject term(s): patient satisfaction
- you can use a question mark (?) to indicate truncation at the beginning, end or middle of the search term: impressionism?
- you may find the online thesaurus Finnish general subject headings helpful when looking for subject terms to use.

Command Search (and/or/not/"phrase") - combine keywords using Boolean operators and / or / not: waltari and sinuhe
- use a question mark (?) to indicate truncation at the beginning, end or middle of the search term: learn? and ?abilit?
- to substitute a single character at the beginning, end or middle of the search term use the percent sign (%): wom%n
- use quotation marks to indicate a phrase: "welfare state"
- enclose words containing hyphens in quotation marks: "nation-state?"
- use parentheses to group search terms (hamlet or "king lear") and critic?

Any Word - do not use Boolean operators (and/or/not) to combine search terms; a search produces a list of references that contain all search terms given
- use a question mark (?) to indicate truncation at the beginning, end or middle of the search term: photograph?
- to substitute a single character at the beginning, end or middle of the search term use the percent sign (%): wom%n
- use quotation marks to indicate a phrase: "welfare state"

Course Search - enter the course code: 408515S or terms in course name: japan?
- use a question mark (?) to indicate truncation at the beginning, end or middle of the search term
- to substitute a single character at the beginning, end or middle of the search term use the percent sign (%)

ISBN - enter the ISBN number with hyphens: 978-1-84860-116-1 or without hyphens: 9781848601161

ISSN/Other Standard Number - enter the ISSN-number with hyphen: 0028-9604
